World Stroke Award Winners 2017

The World Stroke Organization is proud to announce the winners of our World Stroke Awards. World Stroke Award winners are selected based on their impact, innovation and alignment with the World Stroke Day campaign theme. World Stroke Day 2017 was focused on stroke prevention, with messaging that aimed to raise public awareness of key risks and the steps we can all take to prevent stroke.

The ‘What’s your reason?’ campaign was the most successful yet, with 218 activities registered in 62 countries. The Campaign Committee received 35 Award submissions which were reviewed against criteria for High Income, Low to Middle Income and Individual Achievement. Here are the winners in each category:

Award for Individual Achievement: Dr Bindu Menon, India

The Campaign Committee picked out Dr Bindu Menon for an individual achievement award in recognition of her impressive programme targeting rural communities to raise awareness of stroke prevention and to identify stroke risk among the population. We were particularly impressed with the innovation of the telehealth and Neurology on Wheels initiatves, not only in achieving high visibility and engagement in stroke and stroke prevention strategies, but also in increasing access to treatment for people at risk of stroke.

Best Campaign in a Low to Medium Income Country: Mongolian Stroke Association
The Mongolian Stroke Association ran an outstanding campaign, generating impressive reach to urban and rural populations raising awareness of stroke prevention and identifying stroke risk among the population. The Committee were particularly impressed with the use of the hospital network, but also the strategic engagement of government and use of media to raise awareness and build foundations for future advocacy and public awareness campaigns in Mongolia.

Best Campaign in a High-Income Country: World Stroke Day Commission, Argentina

The Argentinian Commission for World Stroke Day delivered an exciting programme of activities focused on awareness of stroke prevention, consistent with the World Stroke Day Campaign message and theme. The Committee were particularly impressed with the achievements of the local organizers, in achieving high visibility and engagement in stroke and stroke prevention strategies and also for their demonstrable commitment to building local advocacy capacity to address stroke issues and needs in Argentina.


WSO and the Campaign Committee wish to thank each and every organization and individual who supported World Stroke Day in 2017 and who took the time to apply for an award. The competition was very strong, but we hope that you will be inspired by the overall campaign success and our 2017 winners as you prepare for World Stroke Day 2018.
